🚧 we have moved over to the Read the Docs Addons search, all of the information on this page is being reworked accordingly.

We use Algolia DocSearch for the documentation search on docs.wagtail.org. DocSearch is made of three components: the search UI widget, the crawler, and the search index. All three can be configured extensively.

Search widget

Widget documentation (v3) | Widget documentation (v2, legacy)

We currently use the v2 widget, which is no longer maintained but still API-compatible with a recently set up index.

Crawler configuration

Crawler admin & configuration | Legacy configuration

We track a copy of the configuration and history of changes here, in addition to what is visible in the Algolia UI, for transparency / ease of troubleshooting.

Crawler configuration CHANGELOG

  • 2024-07-18: Update rateLimit to 1 as Read the Docs now raises 429 Too Many Requests errors otherwise (Thibaud Colas)
  • 2023-03-28: Add caption, td, th as elements to index as content, to index HTML tables embedded into the docs (Thibaud Colas)
  • 2023-03-20: Add separatorsToIndex, recordVersion: v2, and indexing of definition lists as hierarchy (Thibaud Colas)
  • 2023-03-13: Add exclusionPatterns for past Wagtail releases using different search infrastructure, so the crawls are faster (Thibaud Colas)
  • 2023-03-09: Remove release from attributesForFaceting. This was added by mistake to match erroneous configuration (sphinx_wagtail_theme#251 (Thibaud Colas)
  • 2023-01-16: Add sitemap to sitemaps and version, release to attributesForFaceting (Thibaud Colas)

Faceted search by version relies on the docsearch:version meta tag. We set this tag to match the version slug in URLs (current_version context variable from Read the Docs in documentation site templates), so aliases like stable and latest are indexed separately from numbered releases.

Troubleshooting

Past issues

Testing new crawlers and indexes

On the Crawler admin, we can create an arbitrary number of new crawlers. This allows us to test different versions of the documentation crawling, as well as indexing.

To create a new crawler press "New Crawler" and then:

  • Name it according to what the test is for, for example wagtail-trial-signature-variable
  • App ID: XSYGEO7KMJ
  • Start URL: https://docs.wagtail.org/ (well override anyway)
  • Crawler template: Default (well override anyway)
  • Advanced options: leave blank

Then upon saving, head straight to the "Editor" for the crawler, and paste the configuration of our production crawler, with the exception of appId, apiKey, indexPrefix, and index names (in actions and initialIndexSettings).

initialIndexSettings is the only way to customise the settings of the test index associated with the crawler – make sure to set it as appropriate.

Our exclusionPatterns can be set much more aggressively for test crawlers, so they complete their crawl faster:

exclusionPatterns: [
  "https://docs.wagtail.org/en/**",
  "!https://docs.wagtail.org/en/stable/**",
],

Once youre done in the Editor, Save, then go back to the "Get Started" page and complete the setup steps. From then on, the different crawler/index troubleshooting tools can be used – in particular "Search Preview" within the Editor.

The new crawlers index can also be tested with the official DocSearch UI widgets, just like the production index – by using the correct API key and index name. Here is an example.

Indexing requirements

Indexing code

Since a lot of the documentation content is based on code snippets, we treat specific separators as characters to index: _.. Normally those separators would be stripped out when indexing the content. Retaining them leads to more relevant results when they are present in search queries.

Indexing of past versions

Wagtail versions older than v4.2.1 use an older Algolia DocSearch instance which no longer works. To fix search on those builds, we would need to switch versions from tags to branches, which is impractical.

Indexing of autodoc content

autodoc is a Sphinx extension to create documentation from annotated code (using docstrings in Python). This generates peculiar markup which we dont have any control over, so needs special treatment in our crawler.

Here is an example, The Embed model:

  • The whole class is rendered as a dl description list element, with class wagtail.embeds.models.Embed as a dt description term, and everything else in a dd (description detail).
  • Within this dd, every class attribute is a separate dl, with the attribute name (e.g. url) as the dt, and description as a dd

In DocSearch, we need to make sure dt elements are indexed, and ideally reflect the hierarchy of the data. For example, searching for the author_name attribute should ideally point users straight to that attribute, rather than taking them to the whole "Embed model" section.

This is possible with complex CSS selectors to identify the structure:

// Index dt elements within h2 sections as h3.
lvl3: ["article h3", "main h3", "h3", "h2 ~ dl > dt"],
// Index dt elements below parent dt elements within h2 sections as h4.
// And index dt elements within h3 sections as h4.
lvl4: [
  "article h4",
  "main h4",
  "h4",
  "h2 ~ dl > dt + dd > dl > dt",
  "h3 ~ dl > dt",
],
lvl5: [
  "article h5",
  "main h5",
  "h5",
  "h3 ~ dl > dt + dd > dl > dt",
  "h4 ~ dl > dt",
],
lvl6: [
  "article h6",
  "main h6",
  "h6",
  "h4 ~ dl > dt + dd > dl > dt",
],
