I really hate to give up in trying to make something work, but it seems
I 'll be ought to buy a new scanner...
Even with the new (and good, IMHO) Epson backend written by Christian
Bucher, scanimage prints out the same errors I saw in the earlier
releases: the scanner is not recognised. Scanimage -L says that
"/dev/scanner is an Epson (null) flatbed scanner", before I touched the
epson.conf file (the GT 300 is a parallel port scanner).
My attempts to work under WinOS/2 failed, due to a conflict between
the SCSI adapter (Adaptec 2940UW); this makes me think the scanner uses
a proprietary internal parallel to SCSI adapter, but I can't figure out
what kind of protocol or circuitry this uses, even removing the cover
and examining the inside.
Oh: sane doesn't work also on OS/2, but this is normal because the
backend there included is from the official distribution
In january or so I'll buy (probably) an UMAX SCSI scanner, to satisfy
my needs, or more probably an HP ScanJet ('cause I have a scanning
program for OS/2 specific for these scanners), but this doesn't mean
that I'll really give up working on the pretty GT-300: I'll move it to
an older P200 MMX machine without SCSI card and continue experimenting,
maybe sniffing directly the parallel port.
BTW: thanks for your help, Christian: it has really been appreciated.

BTW 2: can anybody tell me how SANE works with HP ScanJet scanners?
