Hi !

> Is there any possibility of using SANE with a network scanner (that is,
> a scanner that hooks directly to the ethernet)?

I have not yet seen such a beast, but it would be very interesting.

The nice thing about them is, that if the vendor doesn't give out the
protocol, the tools for reverse-engineering it are easily available :-).
Tcpdump :-).

> I have been considering this as a way to share a scanner between Windows
> and UNIX boxes, but I am not sure that this makes sense, given what little
> I can understand about network scanners.

Please note, that SANE has its own net interface, and if someone who knows
Windoze and Twain would finally make a frontend for that (hint hint), you
could do that with SANE with any scanner attached to a Unix box.

> Please reply directly; I can summarize to the list if there is interest.

Uh - sorry. I'll trick around a little now to get you at least on the CC:
:-) ...
