Here's a patch to the HP backend (from Sane 1.00) for owners of a
Photosmart that want to scan slide strips. You can apply the patch
with the command

cat patch-photosmart-slide-scanning | patch -p1

from within the sane-1.00 directory, and then typing

make
make install

(the latter as root).

Changes are:
- Added "Exposure Time" option for the Photosmart. A longer exposure
time lets the scanner collect more light and allows you to pull more
detail out of the darker parts of an image. Works great for dark
slides.
Slide strips scan great too, they don't get too blue like they used
to (the scanner by default assumes all strips are negs and uses a
100:200:300 ratio for R:G:B exposure - very ugly for slides!).
- Added "Data Width" option (limited to photosmart for now). Currently
there's no frontend to take advantage of higher bitdepths though.
- Renamed Media option "Negative" to the more general "Film Strip"
as it is used for both neg and slide strips.

enjoy,
