Just some of the stupid questions first.

- You have only connected the SCSI cable (not also the USB) ?
- there is no other SCSI device on the bus with same ID as the scanner ?
- is the "/usr/local/etc/sane.d/epson.conf" (or where it is located on your system) correct
- have you tried the 2.08 version ?
Using this SW version it works on USB (exept for some problems with 'warming up'
when using the negative fil option)

[epson] attach(usb /dev/usbscanner)
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v0.2.08 - 2001-06-09

I will just try to test with the scsi cable also (USB is SLOW with dpi > 600)

> Hi,
>
> I'm trying to use an Epson Perfection 1640SU on an HP-UX 10.20 system
> with sane-backends-1.0.4 and sane_epson_20010522, latest HP-UX SCSI
> cumulative patch. Unfortunately, I don't get very far, and I would be
> grateful for any help.
>
> find-scanner says:
>
> find-scanner: found processor "EPSON Perfection1640 1.04" at device /dev/scanner
>
> However, scanimage --help -d epson:/dev/scanner takes a very long time
> and eventually fails, leaving the scanner in an error state (LED
> blinking red). The behavior is not fully consistent: Sometimes the
> scanner doesn't change to the error state, sometimes I even get the
> listing of device options, and sometimes the scanner is not even
> recognized at all. Here is a typical debug output:
>
> [...]

> [epson] receive buf, expected = 4, got = 0
> [epson] ident failed
> scanimage: open of device epson:/dev/scanner failed: Invalid argument
>
> [...]
>
> It would be very helpful to know where to look: Is the problem with
> the HP-UX code of SANE, or in the Epson backend, or maybe somewhere
> else again?
>
> Thanks in advance
