<P>
Hi,
<BR>
<P>I got my scanner scanning! It does not bring me useable Images, but it works
<BR>
once between rebooting. Well, I am now at t
<BR>
he point all the others were, who wrote to the list weeks ago.
<BR>
<P>The differeces to my previous tries are the following:
<BR>
OS: SuSE 7.0
<BR>
Kernel: 2.4.0-test11 (with usb-scsi-patch)
<BR>
Sane: 1.0.4 (with avision-patch for HP5300C)
<BR>
Epox-mainboard with VIA (different/older model)
<BR>
HP5300C (the same one)
<BR>
<P>And here is what I did (for the non-cracks like me):
<BR>
<P>##############################################################
<BR>
<P>removed all installations of sane and frontends (scanimage xscanimages
<BR>
xsane)
<BR>
<P>downloaded sources sane-backends-1.0.4, sane-frontends-1.0.4,
<BR>
linux-2.4.0-test11 and patches sane.diff, usb-scsi.diff (s
<BR>
ources extracted to /usr/src/ and patches put to /)
<BR>
<P>./configure
<BR>
make
<BR>
make install
<BR>

<BR>

cd /usr/src/sane-frontends-1.0.4

<BR>
./configure

<BR>
make
<BR>
make install
<BR>
<BR>
cd /usr/src/linux
<BR>
patch -p1 < /usb-scsi.diff
<BR>
make menuconfig
<BR>
--> scsi-support -> scsi generic support - set to (M)
<BR>
--> support for USB -> USBSCSI for HP5300C
<BR>
(no other SCSI-drivers, to be save; someone posted that it didn't work with
<BR>
IDE-SCSI)
<BR>
make dep bzImage modules modules_install
<BR>
(configured the boot loader and started new kernel)
<BR>
<BR>
(loaded the modules - (!) old modprobe does not find the 2.4-modules)
<BR>
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/scsi/sg.0
<BR>
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/usb/usb-scsi.o
<BR>
<BR>
(added the scanner to the avision-searchlist)
<BR>
echo "scsi HP" >> /usr/local/etc/sane.d/avision.conf
<BR>
<BR>
(in xterm-window)
<BR>
export SANE_SG_BUFFERSIZE=32768
<BR>
export SANE_DEBUG_AVISION=10 # for more debug-output
<BR>
xscanimage # only press scan, You will only get one (!) chance
<BR>
<BR>
##############################################################
<BR>
<BR>
The buffersize has to be set to 32k! Neither 4k,8k,16k,48k nor 64k did work.
<BR>
Only one scan was possible. Rescanning with the same resolution results in
<BR>
the same filesize, but the head of the scanner doesn't move properly. That's
<BR>
why the image is even more unuseable - it contains parts of the old image.
<BR>
Changing the resolution causes more trash. Here's the image I scanned:
<BR>
<A HREF="http://www.freeresources.de/misc/steindlberger/">http://www.freeresources.de/misc/steindlberger/</A>
<BR>
<BR>
Perhaps I should try the trick with win98 - I would have to install it
<BR>
especially for the scanner. (The trick is -someone posted- to scan once under
<BR>
windows and never switch off after that. Perhaps some firmware oder bugfixing is
<BR>
uploaded)
<BR>
<BR>
Hmm, did I already write, that I think it would be better to mark the
<BR>
scanner at <A HREF="http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html">http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html</A> with the color
<BR>
yellow? I would not have bought it in that case. I would have been waiting for an
<BR>
Epson GT-7000.
<BR>
<P>Have a lot of fun ;-)
<BR>
Greetings
