I am running Caldera eDesk 2.4 on a Dell OptiPlex
GXa. I am running only Linux, not a dual boot
machine. I have a MultiTech ScanMaker X6 attached.
It worked fine under old Windoze. It was not
turned on when I installed Linux, but plug-n-pray
doesn't seem to work on this box. It is a SCSI
internal type running off the parallel port as a
physical attachment. The printer by-pass
capability works great for my HP DeskJet 890C.

I have Sane 1.0.1 installed. When I try "scanimage
--list-devices" on the terminal I get no response
at all. Just back to the command prompt. When I
try "scanimage --device pnm:0 --help" I get the
full output as shown in the tutorial. Looking in
the sane.rc file there is:

"device "
(nil)

I tried using xscanimage to define the device and
when using the KDE menu entry under
KDE->Graphic->X Scanimage I get no response at
all. The application does not run. I tried to
invoke xscanimage under a command
line and get:

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkmain_c: line 534
(gtk_main_quit): assertion 'main_loops != NULL'
failed.

If at the command line I enter:

xscanimage <file_name> pnm:0

xscanimage opens and will show the named file in a
preview.

I probably don't have a proper /dev entry and I am
sure that the Microtek2 driver is not loaded.
However, being new to Linux I am not sure how to
accomplish the basic setup. Also, I can't figure
out which device to use and how to alter the sane
config file.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I intend to run xscanimage as a plug-in frontend
to GIMP once I get it to work.
