<P>

I am running Caldera eDesk 2.4 on a Dell OptiPlex
<BR>
GXa. I am running only Linux, not a dual boot
<BR>
machine. I have a MultiTech ScanMaker X6 attached.
<BR>
It worked fine under old Windoze. It was not
<BR>
turned on when I installed Linux, but plug-n-pray
<BR>
doesn't seem to work on this box. It is a SCSI
<BR>
internal type running off the parallel port as a
<BR>
physical attachment. The printer by-pass
<BR>
capability works great for my HP DeskJet 890C.
<BR>
<P>I have Sane 1.0.1 installed. When I try "scanimage
<BR>
--list-devices" on the terminal I get no response
<BR>
at all. Just back to the command prompt. When I
<BR>
try "scanimage --device pnm:0 --help" I get the
<BR>
full output as shown in the tutorial. Looking in
<BR>
the sane.rc file there is:
<BR>
<P>"device "
<BR>
(nil)
<BR>
<P>I tried using xscanimage to define the device and
<BR>
when using the KDE menu entry under
<BR>
KDE->Graphic->X Scanimage I get no response at
<BR>
all. The application does not run. I tried to
<BR>
invoke xscanimage under a command
<BR>
line and get:
<BR>
<P>Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkmain_c: line 534
<BR>
(gtk_main_quit): assertion 'main_loops != NULL'
<BR>
failed.
<BR>
<P>If at the command line I enter:
<BR>
<P>xscanimage <file_name> pnm:0
<BR>
<P>xscanimage opens and will show the named file in a
<BR>
preview.
<BR>
<P>I probably don't have a proper /dev entry and I am
<BR>
sure that the Microtek2 driver is not loaded.
<BR>
However, being new to Linux I am not sure how to
<BR>
accomplish the basic setup. Also, I can't figure
<BR>
out which device to use and how to alter the sane
<BR>
config file.
<BR>
<P>Any advice greatly appreciated.
<BR>
<P>I intend to run xscanimage as a plug-in frontend
<BR>
to GIMP once I get it to work.
