>> I seem to have the same problems: my scanner (a CanoScan 300 with an AHA1502
>> Any suggestions?
>
> As root, try 'insmod sg' and if there are no errors try
> 'lsmod' and the sg device (module) should be listed.

Thanks Douglas and Larry for helping me out.
It turned out that I had a 'insmod aha152x' in my /etc/rc.d/boot.local script,
but had forgotten to add 'insmod sg'.
Silly mistake...
Now my scanner works fine with Sane.
