Somewhat similar story with my LS-2000. I modified it to accept the
string "LS-2000" and it seems to recognize the scanner, but the
machine locked up hard when I hit "Acquire preview". With the
autofocus code commented out and no slide inserted it would scan a
zero by zero image, but with the slide inserted xsane died with a
floating point exception(!) When I rebooted into Windows I got a
message that the autofocus operation had failed, so I power cycled the
scanner. I'm not fully convinced that inserting the slide really
affected what was happening, I should try all this again.

Of course, I'm assuming that the LS-2000 has the same command set as
the LS-30 just because they look exactly the same. This may be a poor
assumption.

Any tips on how to debug back ends? It seems like you can't compile
with -g because then inb and outb are undefined. And what's
find-scanner?
