Well the extra debugging levels didn't get me anywhere, but when I attempt
to do a simple scan, I get these message in my system logs...

Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second
half of retries.
Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0
channel 0.
Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: ncr53c8xx_reset: pid=29311 reset_flags=1
serial_number=0 serial_number_at_timeout=0
Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: scsi0: device driver called scsi_done()
for a syncronous reset.
Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: ncr53c825-0: restart (scsi reset).
Jun 2 16:16:30 schubert kernel: ncr53c825-0-<4,*>: device did not report
SYNC.
Jun 2 16:16:31 schubert kernel: ncr53c825-0-<0,*>: FAST-10 SCSI 10.0 MB/s
(100 ns, offset 8)

Termination is correct. (this used to work with xvscan under BSD/OS)

Any other clues?

thanks,
> Hi Britt,
>
> up to here the SCSI communication was ok. Now the large amounts of data
> will be transfered. Several possibilities for failure:
>
> Termination ok ?
> hp-backend in SANE V1.0 has some problems in it. If possible try
> upgrading to SANE 1.01 ?
>
> To localize the problem, you also can increase the value of
> SANE_DEBUG_HP and SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_SCSI.
