Hi,
I am having the following problem with my UMAX-1200S scanner,
and have no clue what so ever... At first everything worked fine, but a
while ago I got these bright horizontal colored stripes in my image and
it is quite hard to get rid of them. Sometimes it helps to switch the
scanner off and on but only sometimes. I tried everything, replacing
scsi controllers, synchronous asynchronous mode, allow/disallow
disconnect, replacing cables, enabling/disabling active termination (see
http://www.chipmunk.nl/astraterminator.html) but nothing seems to make
much difference : sometimes everyting is fine and sometimes there are
these stripes. But lately the problem is getting worse and getting rid
of it is getting harder. Today I also tried to boot win95, and found the
same stipes there too while scanning. So it does not seem to be
sane/umax related... But suddenly this window came up stating that the
profile did not match and that I should do a device setup. So I did this
first with Vista scan and then with Vista Scan 32, and suddenly with
Vista scan 32 the scanner 'kicked' in and the stripes went away. Had to
do a preview a few times but after two previews the stripes are gone.
Rebooting to Linux, revealed that everything is now fine under Linux
too. I dit at least ten previews with the stripes completely gone. I
realy have NO clue...
You can also hear it when the stripes will be there because the scanner
makes this 'rumbling sound' wile scanning. Like its constantly blocked
or disrupted
a bit, it does not sound 'smooth'.

Turning on the debugging information shows some kind of an i/o error,

However, now the stripes are gone, the I/O errors still show in the
debug trace. So that does not seem to make much difference either.

I realy have no clue... can it be that the scanner needs to be
calibrated or anything and this gets messed up from time to time, and
the sane software is not able to fix this? Well for the time being it
seems to be working again :)

tx for any suggestions,
Ondrej
