Rob> I don't know that StarOffice is using Sane. I leapt to that
Rob> conclusion, I'm afraid. However, if it makes any difference,
Rob> the scanning frontend identifies my scanner as
Rob> "umax:/dev/scanner" just as xsane does. Is this format generic
Rob> or unique to SANE?

That does look like SANE. ;-)

What does the frontend look like? From what you're saying, it's
neither xsane nor xscanimage. If so, is it a full-blown frontend that
adapts to the options available in the backend?

Rob> As for the TWAIN, StarOffice was ported to Linux. I think
Rob> that OS/2 might have been the native platform (not that OS/2
Rob> has much in the way of TWAIN). I was thinking that TWAIN may
Rob> simply be StarOffices internal default reference to the scanner
Rob> driver, irrespective of platform.

Quite possible. But very confusing. How is a Linux user supposed to
know what TWAIN is?? ;-))
