I have read the "supported devices" doco at the SANE<br>
|
|
website and am down to a choice between 2 reasonably<br>
|
|
priced scanners:<br>
|
|
<p>
|
|
Astra 1220s (UMAX) vs ScanMaker X6EL-DP (MicroTek)<br>
|
|
<p>
|
|
The 1220s seems like a very safe choice, the VW or<br>
|
|
Ford of scanners for Linux. But the ScanMaker X6EL-DP<br>
|
|
has a feature I really want, which is a 35mm slide<br>
|
|
adapter.<br>
|
|
<p>
|
|
The SANE doco says that the ScanMaker X6 is supported<br>
|
|
(that is, there is no warning or other comment associated<br>
|
|
with it) yet I am wary of the variant model number,<br>
|
|
because mfrs do change device internals rather freely<br>
|
|
between revs of the same model...<br>
|
|
<p>
|
|
So, my question: does anyone know whether the X6EL-DP<br>
|
|
is functionally equivalent to the plain X6? Has anyone<br>
|
|
tried it? Would I be stupid to go out and buy this<br>
|
|
scanner in the hope of getting it to work with SANE and<br>
|
|
my RedHat 5.1 Pentium system with Adaptec SCSI card?<br>
|
|
<p>
|
|
If the experts feel the X6EL-DP variant is unsafe then<br>
|
|
I will fall back on the 1220s and give up on scanning in<br>
|
|
any of my thousands of 35mm slides... :-(<br>
