>>>>> On Mon, 23 Nov 1998 13:26:27 +0000, "Dr. Andreas Bolsch" <a.bolsch@ic.ac.uk> said:

Andreas> Well, you're right. But the problem is rather simple: The
Andreas> SE models don't like resolutions below 60dpi. The point
Andreas> is, if you don't specify any resolution at all, the backend
Andreas> reverts to its default which is 18dpi.

Andreas> I don't know why David changed the default from 100 to 18,
Andreas> maybe just for uniformity. Use '--resolution'.

The default for the Mustek backend was always 18 dpi. The reason for
using a poor resolution is to "protect the innocent" who types
"scanimage > foo.pnm" without much thinking. With 100dpi resolution,
you'd end up with a file that takes a lot of disk space and a lot of
time to acquire. And if you use xscanimage, you can set and save any
default resolution you want.

If some scanners can't support 18dpi, we should initialize to the
resolution to the minimum dpi in those cases.
