OK, I added this line to configure:

x_includes=/usr/X11R6/include
x_libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib

(actually, i didn't add anything, i changed NONE to these values). after
running ./configure, make and make install, there still isn't an
xscanimage binary. there is scanimage, and it starts the scanner fine,
but then a whole lot of gibberish appears on the screen.

???

thanks a lot :)
> Some configure scripts have many command line switches; read the
> beginning of the file called "configure", and look for xlib paths or such.
> Try pointing to /usr/X11/lib or equivalent by changing the file called
> configure.
> > i found the lines in configure where it's searching for X11 and X11R6 and
> > it seems that my directories are all where they should be. i tried
> > editing it a couple of different ways, but to no avail. i don't really
> > btw, I'm running the latest development version of Debian ('hamm'), which
