>>>>> On Sat, 19 Jul 1997 18:38:38 -0400 (EDT), Gregory Trubetskoy <grisha@ispol.com> said:

Gregory> I can do xscanimage mustek:/dev/sga and it brings up
Gregory> xscanimage. When I click on "acquire preview", I can see
Gregory> the scanner move to the opposite end where it hangs. I can
Gregory> turn it off and then back on, and this seems to reset the
Gregory> hung condition, but I can't get anythng in the preview
Gregory> window. When I resize it it turns black...

Gregory> My question is - can someone think of a reason why this
Gregory> scanner would stop responding?

It's a faulty timeout in the ncr810 driver. Check sane-scsi(5) for
the ncr810 info on how to fix this.

Gregory> As a general comment on sane - it is my personal opnion
Gregory> that it would save new users a great deal of time if there
Gregory> were clear instructions on how to compile, install and test
Gregory> sane all in one file...

In what way is the README insufficient?
