When you say the system hangs, do you mean Linux, or the SCSI bus? I had
the same problem (I think) when trying to scan. It turned out that the bus
only hung for about 10-12 minutes and then the scan would resume. Trying to
unload and reload the scsi module would result in a complete system hang, as
you described. The solution was to downgrade to kernel 2.1.126, and compile
scsi support and the host adapter support directly into the kernel (it wouldn't
compile as a module).
You might want to give it a shot.
