OK, here's an update on this. I finally got this thing working. Thank
you to all of the respondents. After trying several solutions and
getting no results I contacted Adaptec. Tech support there tried to help
me set up the card for Windows and it still wouldn't work. They sent me
a new card in return for the one I had. I still had problems but after
some changes in the BIOS and some hacking I finally was able to scan
some images with xscanimage. During bootup I see that the scanner is
recognized with the name UMAX.
