The gimp-1.1 versions are development versions so it may be possible
that something important has changed so that xsane does not work anymore
(gimp-1.1.8 does work!).

Gimp-1.1.x does not use ~/gimp, it uses ~/gimp-1.1, you have to set the link
to xsane there!
