Error device I/O

Hello
I am experiencing some problems when scanning color images. Xsane
returns error device I/O and starts the whole process again. Second
when previewing all desktop colors are messed up.
In addition to that I wonder whether someone could give some info on

scanning to tiff and/or jpeg files (instead of pnm).
