I am using SANE for OS/2 with a Microtek E3.

Using the standard command from the readme, which is,

scanimage -d microtek -l 0 -t 0 -x 120 -y 180 > out.pnm,

I can get what I need from the scanner. However, for the life of me, I
cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness and contrast on the
command line. (or any of the other options, like line art, black and
white, resolution, etc.

Follow David's suggestion with "scanimage -d microtek -h".... I'd post the
output here for you, but I still haven't gotten SANE set-up again after a
recent hard-drive disaster.

A note though: I've never gotten the exposure/contrast/brightness controls
to work completely correctly on my E6 --- the firmware either doesn't follow
the published spec, or it's just broken. So, if you get some funny images,
don't be surprised. (On the other hand, if they work just fine, *please*
tell me!)

good luck,
