<TD>Quality calibration</TD>
<TD>For a quality white calibration. For some scanners the driver has to
do this calibration, because I do not know all used calibartion-modes,
the driver may hang if you select this option! Take a look at the advanced
option <I>Shading type</I>, this defines how the calibration is done if

<TD>Bit depth</TD>
<TD>Image depth in bits/sample the scanner sends to the computer, normally
8 in grayscale and color mode. Some scanners support more than 8bits/sample,
but only few file formats support it. If your scanner supports more than
8bis/sample you already get an improvement if you set the bit detpth to
8 because the scanner internal gamma correction is done with the maximum
available bit depth!!!</TD>

<TD>Shading type</TD>
<TD>Some scanners do the white calibration internally. Other scanners want
the backend to calculate the data needed for white calibration, in this
case this option defines how the backend calculates the data that is sent
back to the scanner. Normally, this option is predefined correctly by the
backend. If the white calibration is bad on your scanner, try to change
this value. For most scanners it is ok to set this option to "calculate
average", but for some scanners (Astra 6X0S, Vista S6E, may be others too),
this option must be set to "calculate average and invert".</TD>
